( if the mood is right, then you just might spot a monster )
Yuna breathed a sigh as she took one step to the right, effectively dodging the youkai that was attempting to kill her. Attempting, being the key word. It was so unbelievably weak that it didn't stand even the slightest chance. And that was hardly her way of being egotistical. The demon really was just incredibly weak. It was sad, in a way, to think that youkai had fallen so far in five hundred years. The Sengoku period in Japan had definitely been one of the highest points for demons. Now, in the 21st century it was a miracle for demons to even still exist. And the ones that did were either extremely powerful and in hiding, or ones like this small fry: weak and just jumping at the chance for a little bloodshed. Quite fortunately though, demons of this level were very easy to handle. So easy in fact, that people with almost no spiritual power would probably be able to, so long as they knew how to use a gun, or a knife, or really any other weapon. Mikos were things of the past to be sure. And yet here she was, working away at purifying yet another youkai. Why? Because she knew nothing else. She had done this for centuries and centuries, so stopping now would hardly make any sense. Sure, she had a day job now; a shrine mystic. Just the thought of the career made her grimace. She hated to be on display to so many people who wanted aid. Mystics were people who were called upon for séances, and people that were good at providing others with talismans and charms. In this year they were hardly anything else at all.
But if Yuna wanted to help people, there wasn’t much else she could do. It wasn’t as though she was trained to be of assistance in any other way, and she wasn’t about to go to school for four years just so she could try and be something else. Just the thought made her want to laugh. A lawyer miko. Right. It was good enough to just be able to help people as a mystic, in those small ways. Besides, she was helping people now by getting rid of this demon. If she didn’t purify it she had a feeling that it would just go after some poor, unsuspecting person, and kill them. And she could hardly allow that to happen. She sidestepped another pathetic attempt at an attack and shook her head. This was getting to be very pointless. She needed to end the fight and move on, before someone noticed. She had saw, when she first returned to Tokyo last year, that there had been a lot more police around than usual. Not to mention that whole battle she had heard about on the news. She wasn’t entirely sure what had happened, but she was fairly certain it was good that she had come back after it was over. She was tired of fighting for the most part, and only did it now when it was either unavoidable, or purely for necessity. Raising a thin hand the priestess drew her spiritual power into the palm of her hand, watching as it began to faintly glow blue with her ki. As the youkai lunged at her for what had to be the sixth time, she let her ki out in a blast towards it. The blue light engulfed the demon, and as it was purified it let out a scream of agony. Not twelve seconds later it was gone, leaving only a small pile of ash on the ground in the alley to show that it had once existed. ”May your soul rest in peace,” she murmured, just as she returned to her normal appearance. There was a sound like a twig snapping and she whirled around, eyes narrowed, prepared for another demon. ”Stop hiding,” she hissed to the darkness.

{ yet I followed through the branches, yet I left good faith behind and played a part}
Night was definitely not a good time to visit the slums. Hell, day wasn’t a good time to visit them either unless you were either a very tough guy or very street-smart. As she was neither, Lin was starting to doubt her decision making skills. Looking around her timidly the woman jumped as she heard a rustle coming from some garbage bags. Brandishing the Taser she carried like a sword she pointed her flashlight at the bags. The light shook violently due to her shaking hand, but she was still able to make out the shape of a rat. The woman shrieked as it blinked its beady eyes and lunged for her. Jumping out of the way she took a few wavering breaths of stale air to try and calm down her racing heart.
Though they didn’t succeed in making her feel better at least they kept her from having the heart attack she was sure that she would have had. Well, okay, so she might have only suffered one if there had been lots of rats. Grimacing Lin was about to continue her trek across the deserted alleyway when she heard approaching footsteps. Gasping she quickly lunged for an alcove, managing to hide herself just as someone else entered the alley. Or two someones, as it sounded. She could hear loud crashes and thumps that made her wonder why no one was coming out to see what was going on. Well, it is the slums. Maybe this kind of thing is normal? Gods she hoped not. Risking a glance out she took in the sight of a person being attacked by a flying thing. Thing, being the only word she could come up with to describe it. Afraid, she retreated back to the alcove.
Hearing a pitiful scream of pain and a sigh she gulped. What had happened? It almost sounded like someone or something had been killed. The next thing she knew she heard a voice hiss for her to come out. Although she wanted to stay hidden where it was safe she knew it would only be a matter of time until she was discovered anyway. Mustering up what little courage she could she stepped back out into the alley. A young woman, probably no more than a teenager really, stood above a pile of ashes that she could only assume had been that thing she had seen.
If she didn’t know better she would have even ventured a guess that the thing was the same thing that had caused her own accident. But no, it didn’t look right. Raising her gaze back up to the girl she gave her a quizzical stare. ”Are you the one who killed that thing?” Her eyes drifted back to ashes on the ground of their own accord, much to her disgust; she would rather have not seen it at all. ”Um… what was that anyway? It was hideous.”

Odd...
That was the only thing that passed through the strange armored being's mind as it watched the scene that had played out before it. A young woman annihilating what seemed to be something that had come straight from a child's nightmares. What intrigued the being even more than the scene itself was the woman that stood at the center of it and her strange abilities. Abilities the could only be described as magical. They reminded him a lot of his own, but his, from what he had gleamed in his short existence, where made through science rather than any form of sorcery. He stood silently, thinking to follow this woman back home and find out more about her. He might have been able to do it to if it weren't for a third party.
The sound of a twig snapping echoed through the night. The black clad creature held it's breath, it's single glowing eye shimmering, growing darker as it sank back into the shadows. For a moment it had thought that the sound had come from beneath it's feet, but it hadn't moved an inched since it had caught sight of the woman. It's eye darted about, slowly, until it located the intruder. It's heart slowed and it's eye grew larger with shock. What is she doing here? It asked itself. It reached upward and grasped at the black cloth like appendage that grew from it's body. It pulled the cloth over it's mouth out of habit, releasing a soft sigh.
There was certainly no leaving now. Since Lin had showed up the being was essentially locked into his decision. Now, even if he wanted to he couldn't stop following the mysterious woman. Masato had been lucky enough to receive some of her charity, even if it had ended rather... oddly and it only seemed fitting that he keep an eye out for her. After all, not many people looked to kindly on a scraggly orphan. Then again, most scraggly orphans didn't turn into some abomination of biomachines and man. Masa extended one arm, the cloth around his wrist fluttering in the wind. The cloth suddenly went rigid and phantom hands twisted and pulled at it. When they were done a small blade like object was hanging from his wrist.
He couldn't tell if the woman was hostile or not, but he'd rather not take the chance. His fingertips traced the sharp edge as he watched passively. There was no sense in jumping out. Besides, he looked a tad bit on the nightmarish side and he didn't want to end up making an enemy out of this interesting woman because of a misunderstanding.

( if the mood is right, then you just might spot a monster )
What was out there? Another youkai? She always did have that sort of luck; running into more than one in a single night. Wasn’t there some saying that humans said about bad things always coming in sets of three? Yes, she remembered something like that. And that did always seem to be the case with her own bad luck. That is, if demons could even be construed as bad luck. In the end she would prefer it if demons and humans could just live in harmony with one another. Once again she thought back to the Sengoku Period when, although they were feared and hated by humans, at least some demons could be free to wander amongst society without fear of total ridicule. But now… no, the demons that remained had to hide their presences for their own safety. So they wouldn’t be entirely killed off. Or worse, used as lab experiments. Although the priestess had never seen that done before she had heard rumors in the circles she often found herself in of testing on youkai taking place. It disgusted her to no end that humans were capable of such cruelty. Just because they were different, more powerful, didn’t mean that demons deserved such treatment.
This way of thinking in itself had always made her a bit of an outcast among her peers. Well, not always, but for over half of her long, long life. Other holy men and women loathed her for her compassion for demons. Regular humans were either not aware of her feelings or chose to ignore them. The ones that didn’t loathed her as well. And the youkai? Well, she was a miko regardless of her feelings about killing demons, so they hated her without restraint. There were only a few who learned that she really was different from the others and didn’t wish them harm. And she hadn’t seen nor spoken to any of them in hundreds of years. Whether they had died or just vanished she didn’t know. The times had changed too much, too suddenly for her to stay in touch with them all. There was one she had tried to remain in contact with spiritually, but even that relation had passed into the shadows over time. His grave had long since been destroyed, paved over by some supermarket while the rest of his village had become a strip mall. It made her sick to think of him buried underneath all of that, but there was nothing she could do. He had died… and…
Yuna pulled herself from her thoughts as at last a figure stepped out from an almost completely hidden alcove. Although it wasn’t noticeable her eyes widened a fraction of an inch in surprise. It was a woman, appearing only a few years older than herself. Even so until she could read the woman’s aura there was no guarantee that she was a regular human. This, now that she thought about it, would be infinitely worse than if she were a demon. ”Aa… Yes. I did kill it,” she responded cautiously, her body remaining tense as she continued to stare at the other woman. As the woman stepped a bit closer Yuna was finally about to completely read her spiritual aura. Human. She mentally cursed. How foolish of her, to not sense the woman earlier, and then to use her powers in such an open place. To think that after a thousand years of life she would remain so stupid. It wasn’t the Feudal Era anymore; she couldn’t freely use her powers around humans anymore. Not knowing who this woman was, Yuna remained tense, recalling the rumors of demon experimentation. Wouldn’t those types of people just love to get their hands on a real, life miko? She shuddered at the thought.
Blinking the miko realized that the woman was staring at the demon remains on the ground. She seemed… confused and curious more than anything else, Yuna mused to herself. Perhaps this was a good human? It wasn’t like she sensed any ill will from her. ”It was a youkai—a demon. A low level with no real power, but much anger.” Why was she telling the woman this? Because she had asked, that was why. And it wasn’t like Yuna was dragging her into anything that the woman hadn’t already pulled herself into by coming out of hiding. ”Do not fear my powers. If you mean me no harm than I shall not act against you. It isn’t my nature to harm others unless unavoidable circumstances prevail.” A tingle of power rubbed against the invisible force that was her spiritual energy. Another one? No, not like before. Something… different; something she had never felt before. Without looking away from the woman she called into the night, ”Pardon me, lurking one, I suggest that you come out of hiding as well. I may not want trouble, but that does not mean that I cannot force you from where you hide.”

{ yet I followed through the branches, yet I left good faith behind and played a part}
A demon? Low level? These words made next to no sense to Lin, who could only blink at the girl. Demons were things out of stories, not real life. Why would this girl claim that they were real? It made no sense to her that the child would lie about something like that. Although… she had to admit that that thing she had seen was definitely not a human. At least not a normal human. Maybe some weird, genetically altered one perhaps. Either that or some mutated subspecies of some type of animal. A gorilla, maybe? Either that or a Chupacabra. What a joke; cryptids weren’t real.
But… could a rational person like her really come to agree that that thing she had just seen was a demon? A creature that no one believed existed? That she just wasn’t sure of. But since she couldn’t think of any other name for what it was, demon seemed as good as any. If demons were real, Lin imagined that they would look something like that anyway. It seemed almost appropriate, in a way. Though it really was just so unbelievable that if she didn’t know better she would have sworn that she was dreaming all of this. At least that would make more sense.
Lin shivered slightly at the girl’s next words. Taking an involuntary step back she shook her head rapidly from side to side. ”N-no, I don’t mean you any harm. Y-you don’t need to worry about that kind of thing from me!” Holding her hands up she flinched as the Taser came into view. She released it instantly, as though holding it against the soft flesh of her hand was causing her pain. ”I really don’t mean any harm. I just brought that in case I ran into a drunk or something like that!” Swallowing she flinched again. ”I-I wouldn’t really use it though, I’m not entirely sure how the thing even works.”
She froze as the girl’s stare became cold. But it wasn’t her stare that disturbed her the most; it was her voice. The girl’s voice was so calm and… cheerful that it ended up coming out sounding almost creepy, given the circumstances. Barely allowing herself to breathe, Lin stayed silent as she listened, waiting for something to change.

He thought as he spectated from the building. That is until he heard a twig snap across the way. He jumped down from the tall building. About mid-way wings sprouted from his back to slow his fall. Landing on one knee, his wings quickly withdrew back into his body. Just as quickly he stood up to tower the women by about 6 inches. He wore his hood that only allowed his eerie, glowing, green eyes to show. He quickly walked past them and extended his hand forward. A demonic looking gun, that appeared to form out of nowhere, was pointed in the direction the creature was hiding. The green eye that atop of it acted as a laser. "Yes creature, come out of hiding." He demanded. Grim knew this was no demon and was being every bit as careful to not let harm come to the two women behind him. [/ul]

( if the mood is right, then you just might spot a monster )
Yuna watched the woman start speaking rapidly, obviously trying to convince her that she meant no harm, going so far as to drop some contraption she was holding. Though she had no idea what it was she assumed it was meant to be a weapon of some kind. Gods, the strange woman from the shadows certainly was a skittish thing, stuttering like that. The way she spoke reminded the miko of a child who had been caught causing trouble by a parent, or perhaps by a teacher. It was hardly the kind of reaction one would expect from a fully grown woman. But then, hadn’t humans been this way for centuries? Always afraid of things they didn’t understand; wouldn’t try to understand. No, more often than not they were frightened by things that they couldn’t understand rather than anything else. It made Yuna’s heart ache that after so long not all that much had really changed. Had she been like that too when she was a mortal, she wondered. She did remember feeling frightened of demons, particularly right after her family was killed, but… she just didn’t see herself as ever being quite this fearful. It would have been almost funny had it not been so sad. ”Don’t worry,” she murmured to the woman. ”I believe you.” Yuna gave her a gentle smile to try and calm the woman down. ”I can tell that you’re a kind person and that you wouldn’t do anything.”
Turning her attention back to the thing that hadn’t come out yet she wondered what it could be. Not a demon, and certainly not human; at least not entirely human. Though she had thought she had seen all of the earth’s creations at least once in her long life she had never felt energy like this. She didn’t sense any ill well from it though, so at least that was a good sign. She was glad that the other woman had released that contraption she had been holding. With how nervous she was, the miko worried that the woman might react without thinking and do something foolish. At least now the chances of that happening were far slimmer. She almost rolled her eyes as she noticed that the woman had all but stopped breathing out of fear of the unknown. Sighing silently she again spoke calmly to her, ”Miss, please calm down. You need to breathe before you faint. You saw what I did before, yes? You do not need to be afraid.” This was a bit of a white lie as there was no guarantee that she would be strong enough to handle whatever was out there. She was hardly so egotistical that she would think so highly of her own powers. No, she had learned long ago that no matter how strong she thought she was there were always beings who had ten times more power than she would ever hope to possess.
Yuna let out a gasp as another party entered the scene, flying down to them from somewhere above. She watched in surprise as his wings were drawn back into his body. Was that possible? She hadn’t seen that for many, many years. What was he? She shivered visibly as he walked past her and the other woman, some sort of weapon appearing in his hand. It wasn’t the weapon that scared her as much as it was his eyes; a glowing green that wasn’t remotely human. She flinched as he passed by her, recoiling a bit. She had to literally force herself to not run screaming from the scene. His power overwhelmed her senses, making her dizzy. Swaying slightly she took a step closer to the woman behind her, wishing that for once she was a normal human who couldn’t sense the powers of others. Swallowing she sucked in a deep breath as she watched the person warily. If he meant them harm she wasn’t sure she could defend the other woman but she would still try if it came to that. Thankfully it didn’t seem as though it would, since the man—woman—person, was facing away from them, aiming that weapon of his towards where she had sensed the other creature. ”Who… are you?” she managed to get out, though she was ashamed to find that her voice was little more than a whisper. ”What… are you doing here?”

( if the mood is right, then you just might spot a monster )
When the robed being raised its gun towards her and the other woman Yuna was sure that she was going to have a heart attack. Her eyes closed involuntarily as she said a silent prayer, hoping against hope that this wasn’t really happening. Probably if she were to actually give it a few seconds thought she would realize that she had enough time to throw up a barrier to protect the both of them. But in the end there was no guarantee that her barrier would be strong enough to block an attack. Especially since she hadn’t had to use it in over a century. Who was to say that she could even create one that would hold? Well, she made a silent promise to any god that was listening that if she made it out of this alive she would start practicing her skills again.
The scream of a demon drew her attention away from the cloaked man. She mentally cursed her own failure to notice the presence of the demon. It could have killed any of them while she was letting her own fear get the best of her. Its words were hard to hear, but she understood it perfectly when it called the person that had shot it the Grim Reaper. Yuna’s eyes widened. Grim Reaper? How was that possible? She felt a shiver go down her spine. Was he here for her? Had she finally outlived her welcome on the planet? Although her pride was damaged due to her own neglect her curiosity over what the demon said made her stay where she was and not move forward to rid them of the demon herself. ”You intrigue me, Grim Reaper,” she called out, her voice calm and emotionless. ”I wish to see how you handle demons such as this.” Though she was a little surprised with herself for reacting this way she continued to stare at the two, truly interested in seeing what would happen.

The monster roared in anger. "An impure demon like you will never have the power to destroy a pure-blooded demon." He continued referring to himself as the pure-blood. Grim took this as a challenge and as such his wasn't going to hold back in his next attack. His scythe blade was engulfed in a eerie green light and then a green flame. He held the flaming blade over his head. "I hate demons." He stated as he readied himself for his last attack. "They talk way too much!" He yelled as he brought the blade down in a slashing motion. A green crescent-shaped energy slash engulf with green flames rushed towards the demon. The inhuman creature was set a flame but no cries of pain was heard. The demon fell in two and turned to ashes as it's empty shell hit the pavement. Grim transformed into his human form so he wouldn't frighten the two women he just saved. A small tornado of shadows formed around him as he did so. He was wearing a black jacket with its left sleeve rolled up along with a long-sleeves red shirt. A gray pair of track pants with a red and white strip going up the sides along with a set of black and white tennis shoes finished off his outfit. "How was that?" He asked in amusement. "Thanks for letting me have this one, I haven't had a decent fight all night." He said as he walked towards the ally where she was standing. His blue eyes had some sort of peaceful look as he gazed at her. Note // The last attack Grim used was a combination of his ectoplasmic energy and the green flames his scythe creates to create a powerful attack. You will see Grim use his Scythe in combinations like this often. ;D[/ul]

( if the mood is right, then you just might spot a monster )
Yuna rolled her eyes at the demon’s angry words. How idiotic for it to call itself a pure-blooded demon. This… monstrosity couldn’t be more than a few centuries old. The priestess doubted that it was even as old as she, let alone some of the truly terrifying demons that no doubt still roamed the earth. The fact that it appeared so hideously was proof enough of that. The powerful ones could maintain a human form. But this… no, this was nothing more than a youkai that thought too high of itself. And even if its appearance wasn’t enough for her to tell, its energy levels not to mention its level of anger were also proof that it wasn’t as powerful as it seemed to think. No truly powerful demon would get so angry so easily. At least, none that she had met in her lifetime. The ones that had… hadn’t been worthy of being called strong. Pathetic, perhaps. But not in any way, shape or form strong.
Soon enough the battle was over and the demon was no more than a pile of ash and a shell. This was little surprise to her, as Yuna had determined the demon’s fate as soon as it had entered the picture. Even if the grim reaper hadn’t taken care of it so smoothly she herself could have defeated it. Although at first she had been a bit anxious given its appearance, seeing it move and battle for but a few seconds had been enough to make her realize it was no match. She would normally utter some prayer for its passing in order to help guide it on to wherever it was going, but at the moment it just didn’t seem necessary to grant the thing that kindness.
So instead Yuna turned her attention away from the demonic remains and instead focused her eyes onto the grim reaper. Much to her shock he was transforming, becoming more human in appearance. Bowing her head in acknowledgment of his triumph she couldn’t help but smile. ”Your skills are indeed impressive; I had half-expected the fight to last longer.” At least it wasn’t a lie. For all she had known this person had little strength against demons. ”I always enjoy watching someone who actually knows what they are doing fight,” she commented, raising her head up. ”Though,” she said with a small smile, ”I am not entirely sure that I would call that youkai a decent opponent. Far too overconfident, don’t you agree?”

He said giving the reason why he had to end the fight early. "Yeah, arrogance like that will kill a guy." He slightly laughed at his joke. Grim grew a bit curious about this woman. "You wasn't to bad yourself back there." He returned a compliment. "I have never met a human quite like you before." He tried to change the subject. "How long have you been slaying demons?" His curiosity grew as he looked at her. The more he stood there the more questions popped up in his head. "I'll walk you home." He gestured her to walk and talk with him. ( if the mood is right, then you just might spot a monster )
It was a joke in poor taste, given the circumstances, but Yuna laughed quietly to herself anyway. Because in the end his words were often true; arrogance had often led to the death of many a demon back in the day. However she had also noticed over the years that there were some demons whose arrogance actually seemed to save them from danger. In those cases the demons would most commonly assume that the person or other youkai wanting to fight them was much weaker than they were and not worth their time or trouble. In the end that assumption was probably what had saved their lives. Well, for a while at least, anyway.
Tucking her long hair behind her ear she gave a calm smile. Thank you for your kind words,” she responded graciously. Though she had once been used to receiving praise for her work nowadays she was content to simply work in the shadows without acknowledgment. All the same it was nice to receive the compliment. ”I have… had many years of practice,” she added, glancing back at the nervous brunette behind her. She couldn’t just go spilling all of her secrets to total strangers; especially not in front of normal humans. She knew far better than to be that foolish.
But what to do about his offer? Well, maybe not offer, since it hadn’t seemed like a question to her. More like a demand, really. Not that she truly cared. Her lips twitched before she could smooth her face into a mask of indifference. Turning to look at the woman she asked, ”You shouldn’t be bothered by any more demons tonight. That creeping thing in the darkness may still lurk, but I can’t sense any ill will. If you hurry home you should be safe. Would you like me to walk you?” The woman shook her head hastily and shrank back, looking almost like she had been slapped.
Sighing, Yuna turned away feeling regret. She hated it when humans began to fear her like this one obviously did. But there was no helping it. Taking a step towards the Grim Reaper she gave him a small smile. ”I would be most happy to accept your offer.” She didn’t really feel the need to point out that she lived in the other direction as she had no intention of going back there anyway; at least not until morning. It wasn’t as if she really needed sleep anymore, so why should she return to the shrine when it was still early? Better to wait and go back later. All she had to do, after all, was make sure she returned to the shrine before it was time to start work. Stepping over some ashes the priestess stopped by the man’s side, giving him another smile. ”Although it can be dangerous to give out one’s name to a stranger, I feel I can trust you with me. I am Yuna.”

He said quietly to himself as he brought his attention back to reality and gave the priestess a smile of his own. “It's great meeting you, Yuna. I’m Grim Jr., son of the Grim Reaper and heir to his 'throne'.” His introduction started out strong but ended a little nervously. Grim knew the last words of his introduction could freak her out but this is something he wanted to get done and over with. But still he couldn’t look at her face as he said it for his fear of her reaction. Without looking at the angel that stood beside him, the nervous demon slowly walked off hoping she would follow his lead. Notes // Thanks for understanding xD [/ul]

( if the mood is right, then you just might spot a monster )
So that demon before had been correct; he was a Grim Reaper. The thought sent a cold chill down her spine, but not one that she couldn’t ignore. After all he seemed friendly enough. If he meant to kill her, wouldn’t he have already done so and been on his way? Unless of course he meant to get her alone prior to committing the act. No, what was she thinking? Yuna mentally scolded herself for automatically assuming the worst. She always made sure that she gave demons and humans alike the benefit of a doubt before she made any decisions regarding them. So why would a Grim Reaper be any different? There was no reason to treat him any differently from the others she had encountered during her life, she decided. After all, he seemed just as alive as any of the others. And besides… she had once brought herself to care for, even a little, one of the most dangerous beings roaming Japan. If she could do that she could most certainly trust Grim until he did something to lose that trust. She gave him a small bow. ”It’s a pleasure to meet you as well, --“ She hesitated, unsure of what she should call him. Rising from the bow she gave him a few seconds of contemplation before smiling weakly. ”Grim.”
With one worried glance at the brown-haired woman Yuna gave a sigh before moving to follow Grim. She caught up with him easy enough since he was going slowly, no doubt for her benefit. Though she could have easily matched a quicker pace it was nice to walk slowly; in fact she very much preferred it. Probably because most of the hurried times had either been while she was running from or at a demon, or while she was attempting to keep up with a demon who obviously wanted to lose her. She recalled her own husband doing that on many occasions when they had first met. She had found it annoying at the time but after a while she had grown to find it funny. But he was gone now, and she needed to pay attention to the present rather than reminisce about the past. Once the two were far enough away from the alley – in the wrong direction, she noted – Yuna glanced over at the man next to her. ”Unless my intuition has completely disappeared over the years, I believe that you want to ask me questions. I’ll try to give you as honest of answers as I can, though I am used to…” She bit her lip and looked away, raising her head so she could stare up at the sky. ”I am used to hiding my past. T-to protect myself, I suppose.”
